Join Betsy Stalcup and Sarah Manson as they blazes a trail for a small group of intrepid travelers who are becoming HCI Spiritual Formation Coaches. This program will take 12 months to complete.

This certification track is part independent study, part group project. The goal is to complete the assigned reading and practices as well as lovingly interact with your cohort. Most of the work will be done independently. Trailblazers will meet with each other monthly at a mutually agreed upon time to share their experiences as they engage in Spiritual Formation with God and each other. In addition, the group will meet with Betsy monthly to ask questions, and share progress and pitfalls by reading selected passages from their journals. To clarify, there will be two meetings a month. One with your group without Betsy and one with her. We would like to group to come up with a proposed schedule for the 18 months that will allow them to do the reading and practices in rhythm with their cohort.

We encourage our first cohort to come up with a mutually agreed upon schedule for when they will engage with the various requirements.

This is our first cohort. Let us know if your group will need more time or runs into difficulties. We will be learning as we go.

We realize that some of you have already completed some of the requirements. For example we know that some of you are already HCI network members. We also know that many of you have participated Forming before, or even taught it before. In the registration section below, please check off which prerequisite and/or requirements you’ve already completed.

Prerequisite:

  1. Acceptance into the HCI Network, including a background check and recommendation from two people. We suggest starting this process ASAP.

Requirements:

  1. Attend monthly meetings with your cohort, as well as meetings with Betsy.

  2. Complete first year of Leadership Development: Forming, Listening for Heaven’s Sake, and Immanuel Approach Training. The next Leadership Development course will begin early 2027. However, if you’ve completed Forming but not the other two, please email Sara Orazi-Frau (Sara@GodHealsToday.org) which ones you still need to take.

  3. Teach Forming to at least two other people. You will need a copy of the facilitators workbook, and your participants will need a copy of the participant workbook. Both of these workbooks can be ordered here. You will also need to borrow a DVD set from HCI or stream the videos here.

  4. Read Haley Barton’s Sacred Rhythms (ISBN 978-0830833337) and complete the practice exercises at the end of each chapter. Journal about what you experienced as you practice. When we meet monthly, we will be sharing what we experienced. You can order this book at any bookstore or online store of your choice.

  5. The last chapter of Sacred Rhythms is about creating a Rule of Life. This takes some time as you will have to discern which spiritual practices God is calling you to make part of your regular rhythms. Practice your rule of life for six months and make adjustments as you go.

  6. Write a brief description of Lectio Divina that you could use to introduce the exercise to someone who is unfamiliar.

  7. Lead the Lectio exercise at Daily Connect at least five times. When you are ready, let Sara know and she will arrange a time for you to lead Lectio. You will need to attend the entire hour. Lectio begins about 15 minutes into the hour. You can then email her (Sara@GodHealsToday.org) to schedule times to lead.

  8. Notice what changes as you participate in this training. Spiritual formation is about making space for God in our lives. The changes we observe may not seem connected to the practices we are engaged with, but on further reflection we notice a connection and we know that the fruit came from our intentionally making space to engage with God.

Facilitators

BETSY STALCUP is the founder and executive director of Healing Center International. Her dream is to see centers of healthy, healing community spring up around the world, where people can grow to love and trust Jesus with their whole hearts. She earned a B.S. and M.S. from UC Santa Cruz and a Ph.D. from Stanford University. She was married to Sam Stalcup for 38 years until his passing in May 2024. They have six adult children, including two sons-in-law and a new daughter-in-law, as well as two granddaughters. And a dog named Olivia. She has trained under Dr. Todd Hall in his Relational Spirituality Coaching program, and is now ready to bring some of this life-changing training to you!

Time and Place

Once registered, your email will be shared with all the participants. You will meet monthly online, via Zoom, with a small group of other participants. You will also meet monthly with Betsy Stalcup and Sarah Manson. (Zoom links will be sent to registrants).
