Leadership Development

What is Leadership Development?

At HCI we are passionate about developing leaders who know Jesus intimately and who can pass along healthy relational skills so that others may experience life-giving community.  One way we do this is though our Leadership Development (LD) groups.

What is the purpose of our Leadership Development groups?

The purpose of the groups is two-fold:

  1. We want to help leaders connect with each other so that each one has healthy community— safe people with whom they can share the joys and sorrows of life.

  2. We want to teach leaders the essential skills they need to be able to:

  • Know how to live in rhythms of joy and shalom. Joy is high energy, shalom is low energy. We are meant to alternate joy and shalom. We learned this from our friends at Life Model Works.

  • Have an intimate relationship with God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  • Have healthy relationships with other people. No codependency!

  • Have an accurate self-image. Know they are beloved by God. No narcissism, no self-hatred.

  • Understand how transformation works. It is not by direct effort; it is by engaging with God for change and letting him do in us what we cannot do for ourselves. We learned this nugget from David Takle.

Who attends our Leadership Development groups?

Our groups are composed of adults from different generations, include both men and women, make space for people from all denominations, include church lay members and leaders, and embrace participants from a wide range of life experiences and situations.

It’s important to know that our LD groups take seriously the commitment to create healthy, life-giving community where deep connections with God and other people are developed. All are welcome to express interest in and seek information on our groups, however, it is best for us, and for you, if you are recommended by another HCI community member to join a group. In other words, we want to get to know you some. So how can we do that?

HCI offers several ways to connect, enjoy, and participate with us. We regularly offer classes, grief support groups, special events, and Daily Connect. Daily Connect is a free, open to all, daily connection through Zoom, that follows a rhythm of spiritual practices including Lectio Divina and Immanuel Prayer. This website and our monthly newsletters are great ways to find out what we are offering and sign-up.

As you engage with the community, you are always welcome to let any of our leaders know you are interested in becoming a part of a Leadership Development group. They will help you connect with us. You can also reach out to us directly at HCI@GodHealsToday.org.

I already participate in HCI, and I’m ready for this next step. What does that look like?

First express interest. Let an HCI staff member or another community leader know you are interested.

You will be invited to attend a first-year group. This first-year group is a great way to experience love and acceptance, learn and practice basic quieting and listening skills, and bond with others in healthy ways.

After six months, we will ask you to complete an application process. This process includes filing out a form, letting us get to know your story a little more, references, a background check, child protection training, and a $30 application fee. This process adds to the safety of the groups for all involved. These groups start every January. We also hope to begin offering a first-year group in June.

What does a typical meeting involve?

Our LD groups meet monthly for two hours. At each meeting we typically:

  • Briefly share our highs and lows with each other. We want to rejoice with you, and we also want to hear about your sorrows, places where you need our prayers and support.

  • Have a teaching on a relational or spiritual skill

  • Spend time interacting with Immanuel

  • Share in groups of three

We also encourage all who attend to prayerfully spend time building relationships with those in their group, so each one has a go-to group-of-three who can listen and pray for each other. We want each leader to have a sense of belonging, of being known and loved. Our desire is that those who participate in Leadership Development groups would connect deeply with God and each other.

Over time, each group will learn about and practice skills in these main areas:

  • Reflective Listening

  • Immanuel Prayer

  • Human Developmental Maturity

  • Speaking the Truth in Love

  • Healthy Relationships - NOT Co-dependency
